Star-Worthy Food at Old Airport Road

When my Japanese friend visited Singapore, I make it a point to bring him to Old Airport Road to taste some real Singaporean food. I understand there is some debate going on about Michelin star and stuff but I think it is a bit silly to fuss about the stars and clearly everyone have their own personal opinion about it. My mum works in a canteen, she wakes up early like 4-5 am to prepare her food together with my aunts and work till 8 – 9pm, it is a laborious job just like a chef who wakes up early to buy ingredients and cooks fine cuisine too, there is still a lot of effort that goes into the food regardless whether hawker food or fine cuisine and stars are just a guide.

Anyway, that’s just my personal opinion. The real star for today is food at Old Airport Road such as Albert Street Prawn Mee (8.00 SGD for Large Prawn Mee) which my Japanese friend enjoyed very much. All the while, praising its rich and addictive soup base.

Then there was Chuan Kee Satay at 50 cent a stick, and grilled to perfection with just the right amount of charred bits and smokiness and beautifully marinated (tender) chicken chunks or pork if you prefer.

My friend also had a terribly spicy Char Kway Teow from Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow. I only had a few bites of it. It was way too spicy for me.

Lastly we had a classic Sambal Sting Ray (12.00 SGD) from one of the seafood stalls (not BJ, Long House or Mattar). It was near BJ, possibly Happiness Seafood and it was not bad. There is a World Street Food Jamboree thing going on, but I felt something is missing when Korean sundae, tteokbokki and Taiwanese chicken cutlet and mee sua are absent.
