LASALLE Show 2013 : Plenty to See.

24th May 2013. Vesak Day.
I am overwhelmed.
So many works!

Just a week or so ago, I was at the NTU Art, Design and Media Graduation Show and then last Friday, I went for the LASALLE Show 2013 Exhibition. I was rather impressed by the works, particularly those from the Visual Communications.

This time round, it would be just a few of my humble opinions and a series of photos to tantalize your senses and get you to visit the show, because it was worth it.

For the fine arts, there are hits and misses. But certain works definitely raise some eyebrows and some intrigued me with their unique styles and clever wit.

Veronica Lek's Transit is a simple but clear video work about movement and crowd. It is a close-up of an escalator and the changing interchanging of light and shadows narrates the whole concept of transit clearly.

Moving on to architecture, I have the impression that the works here are pretty much driven by form and the really good panels have excellent aesthetics. I also observed, like NUS, there is a concern for healthcare and the elderly, something that I also observed in the Visual Communications section.

The fragmented, triangulated form is quite common among the works at the grad show. How I am somewhat attracted to Lee Yun Ying's design for Gan Eng Seng Primary. I thought despite the fragmented form, there is a consistent axis that ground it down, making look like floating spaces. I am not quite sure whether it is a fitting design for a primary school though.

The Visual Communications section is truly the star of the show, the aesthetics were great and what really made me enjoy this show is the depth in many of the works at the Visual Communications section. The nostalgia theme for example, wasn't just a superficial exploration but there is much thought and process put into getting the essence of that nostalgia theme.

There were journals of personal experiences, studies of symbols, interviews, analysis of the aesthetics etc…it was in short, enjoyable! Like a really prepared dish that smelt great, looks good and tasted delicious.

Recollection by Lee Suyeon is an project exploring the collection of memory within one's self. "Digital Dementia" is a term for people suffering from poor memory due to dependency of digital devices.

Eleonora Lam does a nice job exploring typography. She even has journals detailing her studies such as this section on kopitiam.

Victor Goh explores visual elements of HDB flats in Residential Rediscovery. Another interesting work that goes beyond just simply taking a few photos of HDB flats or presenting them superficially, motifs such as the orchids at the HDB flats in Pasir Ris are being studied.

I rather enjoy The Estate-tic Project by Dionne Hoe in which the project attempts to interest Singaporeans "to discover more about the various estates in Singapore".

Don't Wait Till They are Gone by Shanlyn Chew Xiang Ying seem to focus mainly on Tiong Bahru where the project tries "to address the problem of realizing the importance of a heritage only when it is soon-to-be-demolished or demolished".

Void; The Spaces Between by Lim Jing Yuan is a beautiful and impressive work focusing on urban spaces that are "being used on a daily basis and was often neglected and forgotten in the midst of all the fanciful buildings."

Hui Fang Kor's attempt at an Olympic logo with Singaporean flavour. Pretty clever! Although I am not sure about the emphasis on the two glass conservatories of Gardens by the Bay.
