I shall take a break from my Japan posts with a recent visit to Izakaya Nijumaru 居酒屋二重丸 located at Cuppage Plaza. Izakaya Nijumaru offers a variety of set meals ranging from 8.00 to 20.00++ SGD. There are no pictures in the menu and most of it is in romaji.
The izakaya was very noisy and crowded with waitresses shouting out orders and noise from the patrons’ chatter. Service was very efficient.
I had a Shogayaki Set (Beef) for 12.00++ SGD. I like the addition onions which add a sweet fragrance to the sauce but the ginger flavor seemed quite weak. Overall I find it average.
A bowl of tofu , a wedge of orange and pickled daikon were being served. Nothing exciting.
We also had a Tempura Moriawase for 16.00++ SGD. The vegetable tempura was quite well done, crispy on the outside and juicy in the inside. Batter was thicker than the ones I had in Japan. A major flaw of the tempura is inconsistency. Some of the tempura seemed undercooked or overcooked as for the case of the Ebi Tempura which was disappointingly soggy and the prawn wasn't succulent anymore.
My friends had a Buta Rose Katsu Set (10.50++ SGD). They looked like karaage rather than katsu to me. I shall not comment because I didn’t try it.
The bill adds up to about 20 bucks per person after GST and Service Charge. Overall, I thought the food was neither impressive nor bad. Its just simple izakaya fare (tweaked for local tastes?)
Apparently Japanese frequented this place and the dishes were prepared by a Japanese chef. It amused me greatly when I read some reviews on some food review websites, that this has been a factor to evaluate a restaurant.
