During my maiden trip to Japan years ago, I was fascinated by Japanese curry which has the spicy, exotic fragrance of Indian curries and texture of a stew and it was not so spicy and quite sweet.
And when I came back from my Fukuoka trip, I was craving for decent Japanese curries. It was then when I found Curry Favor. They have a branch in Novena Square a few years back but perhaps due to financial problems, they have since closed the Novena Branch.
The Stamford branch is housed within the Stamford House, a historical building with an ornately decorated façade. It was designed by Regent Alfred John Bidwell in 1904. Part of the building served as an annex for Raffles Hotel and as the Oranje Hotel in 1930s. It even has a stint of one of Singapore’s main shopping centre around the 1960s.
The menu remained familiar, the wide variety of curries remained together with the fried appetizers and some new additions such as a dessert section. We had a Chicken Katsu Curry for 12.90++ which comes with a bowl of miso soup or bowl of salad.
It tasted as good as the last time I tried it, wasn’t too thick, starchy with a nice flow. It was fragrant with slight sourish finish and the spicy version is nothing compared to a typical Chicken Curry, it would be considered mild in Singaporean context.
It didn’t try the katsu as I had a Mushroom Fry instead for 7.90++ SGD. Warm, juicy, slightly chewy interior with a crispy crust that wasn’t oily at all. Served together with a tartare sauce dip (probably made in the kitchen or a better quality one), it was a great snack to have during those rainy days or a chit-chat session.
At the end of the meal, we left the restaurant as satisfied patrons. The service was friendly and decent, one waitress even took the initiative to offer us a chair to put our bags! The interior design would remind you a casual design studio.
