Plaza Brasserie | Treasures of the Sea

22nd March 2014.
I first visited Plaza Brasserie with my mum and sister for lunch more than 5 years ago. I fondly remembered their nian-gao prata and really fresh prawns and sashimi then. I was given the opportunity to revisit Plaza Brasserie headed by Chef Jackson Goh, at PARKROYAL on Beach Road about a week ago to sample their signature Treasures of the Sea Buffet.

PARKROYAL on Beach Road is located opposite the historic Kampong Glam conservation area and along what we would call the Golden Mile showcase of architecture where you can find some of Singapore’s earliest experiments with architecture such as the Golden Mile Complex by DP Architects in 1973 and the Concourse by Paul Rudolph in 1994.

The highlights of the Treasures of the Sea Buffet is its seafood live station, where a la minute dishes are prepared upon order and served to you at your desk. Dishes include a rather decent Indian style Claypot Fish Head which you could share with your fellow diners. I particularly enjoyed this with the bread from the buffet counter.

Also impressive were the generous plates of fish steamed in Hong Kong style and served with a soy sauce and garnished with chilies and ginger. One of my favourite styles of enjoying fish, I loved the steamed Sea Bass. The portion of each steamed fish is enough for about 2-3 people but if you really love fish, you could have one for yourself too!

What is a seafood buffet without the crustaceans? Also on offer as part of the seafood buffet are White Clams, Bamboo Clams, Flower Crabs and Green Mussels (served a la carte style). The White Clams are not bad, mildly sweet and slightly spicy with Spicy Coriander Sauce (you could also opt for Black Bean Sauce or XO Sauce). You might also like some mantou to go with the Chili Crab on offer too! Speaking of crabs, Plaza Brasserie is considering bringing back its signature Crab Feast too.

Another crowning feature of the buffet is its Salmon Feast featuring Salmon “Wellington”, Baked Salmon with Herb and Spices, Sea-salt crusted Salmon with Bread Stuffing and Grilled Salmon Fillet with Asian Sambal Chili in Banana Leaf. I enjoyed the Baked Salmon with Herb and Spices the most.

On the day of our dinner, I also took the time to sample some of the buffet items. I thought the appetizers were rather delicious. They have tuna tataki, pineapple sausages, seafood meatballs, croquettes etc. The sliced abalone was particularly popular.

For the hot dishes, there was Hainanese Chicken Rice as well as Chinese classics such as stir fried beef, braised sea cucumber and roast pork. The live cooking counter offers Laksa from Friday to Sunday for the buffet as well as Drunken Prawns which was really delicious.

The buffet is on from 14th March to 30th April, Plaza Brasserie is also having a special Easter Sunday Lunch  on the 20th of April, featuring a kid's corner with activities such as balloon sculpting and cartoon screenings alongside festive dishes like an Oven Roasted Whole Leg of Lamb and Paella with Prawns in Mint Sauce

There is also a Best for Mum buffet going on in the month of May for Mother's Day featuring a culinary trip back in time with nostalgic dishes like Braised Pig Trotters with Black Vinegar and Blue Ginger, Kampong Chicken Curry with Bread Loaf, "Lo Han Zhai", a popular braised mixed vegetable dish and a Popiah Counter!

Most importantly, all Mums and Grandmas get to dine for free when accompanied by 2 paying adult buffet diners for lunch (except 11th May, 3 instead of 2), and 3 adult buffet diners for dinner in May.
