The Waterfall | A Sunday Brunch

6th October 2013.

This is indulgent.

Maine Lobsters, Fine de Claire, Kumamoto & Tsarskaya Oysters, Crabs, Hokkaido Scallops, Iberico Ham, Herb Crusted U.S Colorado Lamb Chop, Tomahawk Steak, Roasted Pork Loin and Belly, Foie Gras Terine……are just some of the items on offer at the quaint and cosy Waterfall restaurant located at the Garden Wing of the grand Shangri-La Hotel Singapore.

Besides the luxurious buffet, which comprises of a shelf of desserts, an array of breads, exotic cheeses, salads, appetizers. There is also a seasonal Pass Around menu which are small plates of food. It was being carried around by one or servers and you basically pick whatever fancies you. It is sort of like getting dim sum from the dim sum auntie. On the serving board for that day, I had a really good, almost perfect Beer Battered Fish and Chips which uses fried strips of potato rather than fries which gave the dish a nice crunch.

There was also the Japanese Tuna Wrap which a nice snack. The accompanying tomato was very juicy. Or, you could get the Ham and Pineapple Frittata if you prefer something more brunch-like. The only let down was the overly salty and oddly named Tomato and Cheese Tian.

I wouldn’t go on and on about the food or else this post would never end, instead I will go straight to one of our favourites on the buffet line: the Organic Herb Crusted U.S Colorado Lamb Chop which was extremely tender, still juicy with a mustard-like herb crust, served with Mint sauce or Rosemary Jus. The other two counterparts, the Tomahawk Steak and Roasted Pork Loin and Belly were equally good too and according to the chef, all three were meticulously prepared overnight.

Waterfall Cafe - Champagne

The full Brunch menu includes free flow wines and Tattinger Brut Champagne at 158++ SGD per person. For an additional 40 SGD, The Waterfall offers premium alcohol options such as Tattinger Brut 2005 and Tattinger Prestige Rose from France. Both alcohol options include access to their selection of herb-inspired cocktails (and mocktails) such as the tangy citrus concoction named Swing Me or a more herbal flavoured Mumbo Jumbo.

Overall the food was rather impressive and understandably, with a range of premium items like foie gras and iberico ham on the menu plus fresh imported seafood from Japan, France, United States and Russia etc, this brunch is going to be a pinch on your wallet.

Waterfall Cafe - Cold Cuts
Waterfall Cafe - Cheese

Priced at 158 SGD for free flow champagne, it may be expensive but when compared with that of Ritz Carlton’s Greenhouse, Fullerton Hotel’s Town Restaurant, Mandarin Orchard’s Triple Three Restaurant, St. Regi’s Brasserie Les Saveurs, Swissotel’s Equinox and Grand Hyatt’s Mezza9, Waterfall Café’s price tag is within the range of 120-160 price average of Sunday Champagne Brunches among the higher-end hotels.

Waterfall Cafe - Interior

This was my first Sunday Champagne Brunch and while I can’t speak for what other places have to offer. From what we had tried, it was a worthwhile splurge to celebrate that special occasion. With a laid back lounge-like atmosphere at the Waterfall, it was my kind if is a stress-free paradise. Did I mention the awesome live performance by American Jazz vocalist, Ms. Viva Vinson and her accompanying guitarist (an expat who has spent at least 9 years in Singapore) They even sung some of my favourite Frank Sinatra classics ^.^

It was a happy Sunday Brunch.

Thank You Josephine Tee from Shangri-la Hotel Singapore for the invitation and thank you Chef Steven Ng, Josephine, Yeong-Min, Ting-Chiu and Jane for hosting us.

  1. I think you meant Mandarin Orchard's Triple Three instead of Marina Mandarin ;)
