Ikyu | Food Prepared with Heart, Sincerity and Uncomplicated

10th October 2013.
I was at Tiong Bahru a couple of times in the past few weeks getting my kueh posters up at Books Actually, a local independent bookstore supporting and promoting local literature.

Located very near Books Actually is a Japanese restaurant named Ikyu, I was craving for Japanese food one day and after finding out that they serve some reasonably priced set lunches (28++ SGD) including a Chirashi Set, I was set to visit this Japanese restaurant.

There are a couple of choices for the appetizer, I had the Wagyu Tsukune which is grilled wagyu patty on skewers and it was quite delicious. The minced meat was consistent and the wagyu tasted great with the slightly smoky flavour from the grill.

For the main, I had the Ikyu Bari Chirashi which is a colourful symphony of sashimi cubes and well-seasoned sushi rice. While I thought it could have been slightly more chilled, the sashimi was pleasantly fresh and succulent with distinct flavours and textures. The main came with a couple of takopachi, some of the best I had thus far and a bowl of miso soup.

Finally, a simple but rich scoop of matcha ice cream and a cup of tea/ coffee rounds up the meal nicely. Portions were just right and the service was great. Despite its contemporary interiors, the food here like what the restaurant described : its Japanese food prepared with heart and sincerity and most importantly uncomplicated food. I look forward to coming back to Ikyu again.
