Mid-Autumn was a little early for us in Korea because we wouldn’t want to risk having rotten mooncakes after making the effort to transport them from Singapore for 2888 miles. We set up a modest picnic feast next to our school’s lake with our mooncakes, some snacks and an array of fruits including peaches, apples and grapes (Korean grapes have this jelly like texture that I don’t enjoy).
In the end, we chose to have the assorted baked mooncakes from Mandarin Court of Mandarin Orchard Hotel having read the positive reviews by Indulgence after Workout.
Personally I was already impressed by the service of Mandarin Court, they were very friendly and helpful and even allowed us to reserve a box before they were made available for pre-ordering.
The Baked Mooncake with Mixed Nuts and Jamón Ibérico was really unique, it was quite unlike other mooncakes I had before, it wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet and I enjoyed the savoury tinge to it. On top of that, there were plenty of nuts embedded in the mooncake to give it that great crunchy texture. It seemed to go really well with Yi Pin’s Tie Guan Yin.
I also got some mini Tai Chong Kok Mooncakes which I found rather ordinary. But, if you are looking for something affordable then Tai Chong Kok’s Mooncakes are very affordable compared to those from the hotels. The mooncakes from Mandarin Court cost about 54-58 SGD a box while a box of 4 Tai Chong Kok mooncakes cost about 40 SGD.
You might have noticed those "lanterns", they were the work of my friend's. Mandarin Court's Mooncakes are available for purchase at the Deli in Mandarin Orchard Hotel till 30th September. You could order with this form too and email mandarincourt.orchard@meritushotels.com. Do check for credit card offers too!
