Located along Lorong Selamat, Kafe Heng Huat is very well-known for its char-kway teow, the last time I visited Penang, the café was closed and I didn’t had to try and so it happens that we found ourselves at Lorong Selamat shopping for pastries again and we decided to give Kafe Heng Huat a try.
The person behind this much-raved about char koay teow is Madam Soon Suan Choo, who has been selling for more than 40 years and she is also the owner of the coffeeshop.
Bad manners or not, the char koay teow we had at Kafe Heng Huat was simply awesome. The smoky wok hei essence was definitely present in this dish, a testimony to a well-seasoned wok. The char koay teow was very flavourful and relatively moist compared to the others we had in Georgetown. The cockles was big and juicy and so were the prawns (and crunchy too).
The Char Koay Teow is relatively pricey at 5-6 RM a plate compared to 3.5-4 RM at other stalls. Still, the dish was excellent to warrant that pricing. A treat to splurge on when you visit Penang perhaps?
