Penang : Dim Sum in Georgetown

Tho Yuen - Tea

Penang, Malaysia
One of the must-eats in Penang besides their laksa and char kway teow is dim sum. With a handful of dim sum restaurants located around Georgetown, we had the opportunity to try out two dim sum restaurants during our short trip there.

Tho Yuen - Prawn Fritters

Tho Yuen
Tho Yuen Restaurant is one of those high recommended by food blogs, so we made it a point to have breakfast at the restaurant one day. The restaurant was relatively empty when we arrived and food was served old-school style: on a trolley.

Tho Yuen - Har Gaw

We took a few classics such as the Har Gaw and Black Bean Pork Ribs and both of us weren’t impressed by what we had, the har gaw has a slight seawater-like after taste and the dumpling itself was slightly dry, not the juicy, succulent, haw gaw with thin pastry that I was looking for.

Tho Yuen - Black Bean Pork Ribs

The pork ribs were better but it wasn’t tender enough.

Tho Yuen - Char Siew Pau

The char siew pau was decent.

De Tai Tong - Dim Sum Trolley
De Tai Tong - Siew Mai

De Tai Tong
In contrast De Tai Tong left a better impression than Tho Yuen with their tasty, juicy siew mai.
