Chinese New Year Eve
This year our family went back to Zhou’s Kitchen for our Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner again despite the disappointing meal we had in Zhou’s Kitchen last year. However, this time round we had it at Anchorpoint instead of the Novena branch.
Fully packed as usual, our dinner started later than planned. Our family had the Lunar New Year Menu 2 for 4 persons ($188++ SGD). Due to some misunderstanding at the start, the food was coming very slowly. Fortunately we managed to clear up the misunderstanding in time to not spoil the festive mood. The management initially thought we were sharing a menu for 4 with another 4 of our relatives next to our table while it was in fact two separate tables with a Lunar New Year Menu 2 for each table.
The first dish to come up every Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner is the Bountiful Harvest Salmon “Yu Sheng” 丰收鱼生(挪威三文鱼生). We wiped it clean. I love the sweet and sour dressing used.
Next up was the Braised Shark’s Fin with Dried Seafood in Pumpkin Broth 鹏程万里(金汤海味翅). This hearty and robust soup was really good. I enjoyed how the fragrant pumpkin broth goes with the texture of the shark’s fin. We could have seconds of this soup.
The third dish was the Braised Homemade Beancurd and “Bai Ling” Mushrooms with Black Moss高瞻远瞩(发菜白灵菇三层楼). I felt that this was decent, nothing to hoohaa about.
Then there was the Deep-Fried Prawns with Special Sauce served with Steamed Buns 欢天喜地(辣汁生虾伴蒸馒头). Simply put, this is more like Prawns with Chili Crab Sauce. Regardless, it is very tasty and the prawns were very fresh. The scrumptious special sauce is very addictive, it was spicy and sweet and not too thick and goes very well with the steamed buns.
The climax of the meal was the Steamed Garoupa with Minced Garlic 一帆风顺(金银蒜蒸石斑), an ambrosial piece of fish that was well-cooked with a soy sauce based sauce and topped with fragrant minced garlic. The meat of the garoupa was slightly springy and succulent without any pungent aftertaste.
Follow up was a plate of Stewed Ee-fu Noodles with Conpoy and Golden Mushrooms 举杯贺胜(香芒布甸). Another decent dish, my younger brother seemed to enjoy the noodles here more than the one at Novena.
Our meal ended with a big plate of Chilled Mango Pudding 举杯贺胜(香芒布甸). It was just average mango pudding with generous chunks of mango embed in it.
Overall, we felt that the food at Anchorpoint was a much better than the one we had at Novena last year. The service at Anchorpoint needs some polishing, the staff seemed to have trouble tackling the festive crowd and aren’t as efficient as the crew at Novena. Regardless, our pleasant experience at Anchorpoint has put Zhou Kitchen back into our list for next year’s Chinese New Year Reunion dinner venues again.
