Truffs is a chocolate shop opened by local chocolatier Tong Ee Liang. It is tucked away on the second storey of a shophouse along Telok Ayer Street. You might miss it if you aren’t observant enough. It shares the space with a design company.
The chocolatier is a kitchen rather than a shop or café. According to the staff, the owner of the chocolatier has a purist approach towards the consumption of chocolates hence truffles were being sold instead of wine chocolates or hazelnut chocolates etc and no preservatives were being used. This is to allow us to taste the purest and the natural taste of chocolates.
The truffles are not cheap. A box of nine can would cost you more than 24 SGD. However, after trying a few of them, Liang Wei, Yew Ann and I agreed that they are rather good and the quality is excellent.
Their chocolate cake are only available via advance orders therefore if you are planning to have a walk-in drink or cake, you will be disappointed.
The service was very good, the staff offered us to try the truffles regardless whether we are purchasing any and she does not hesitate to share her knowledge on the truffles with us and explain bit by bit about the making of the truffles and answers our questions confidently.
The truffles are inconsistent with some having a thicker crust and some having a thinner crust because they were all handmade. The 70% Honduras Dark Chocolate was bittersweet and melts almost instantly in your mouth leaving a slight sour after taste due to the high cocoa content.
The 66% Antilles Dark Chocolate was sweeter with the same kind of texture except it does not have the sour after taste, in addition, it has a very faint nutty flavour. This was our favourite among the two truffles that we tried.
All in all, it is a nice place to get a chocolate gift for dark chocolate lovers if you are willing to splurge a bit for a nice elegant box of truffles.
