Toraya Café
is the modern confectionery arm of Toraya Confectionery , a wagashi maker with
more than 500 years of history going back to the 16th century when
it supplied traditional sweets to the imperial family. There are about 4-5
outlets of Toraya Cafes in Tokyo, one of which is located in the Tadao Ando-designed Omotesando Hills.
As it is
summer, the shaved ice is a rather popular snack in the many cafes around
Japan. Toraya Café has different flavours depending on the month. For the month
of September, it was Matcha and Citrus Milk Shaved Ice: a triple layered “shaved
ice” with sweet red bean paste (their signature AN Paste) at the bottom, matcha
flavoured shaved ice, topped with milk and a garnish of yuzu peel. The
combination is refreshing but I regret having it in an air-con environment.
