What's a good bowl of noodles mean to you?
For me, it has always meant a hearty, unpretentious, and fulfilling meal. The hearty stock warming your belly. The savoury, simply constructed pure richness of flavour swirling and lingering in your mouth. The many fresh ingredients that lie in an exciting dance of sorts with the smooth, silky noodle strands just slurped down.
Nom nom. Indeed, Nam nam delivers just that.
Conveniently located at Wheelock Place and Raffles City, the two outlets serve unpretentious, cheap and good Vietnamese pho. They also serve other Vietnamese food, like rice rolls and baugette sandwiches. I think it has won a sizeable following from this recipe — good value from a good, fulfilling meal.
My friend and I both tried the Pho Beef Combo ($9.90). Portion was pretty substantial — decently filling, for the price you pay for a meal in a nice, air-conditioned shopping centre establishment. With beef steak slices, beef balls, beef shank, beef tendon and honeycomb tripe, this is one dish that brings home the beef (pardon the pun). I particularly liked the beef tendon and honeycomb tripe. The tendon was melt-in-your-mouth tender and had a creamy savoury taste to it, and the tripe was lovingly jelly-like but sandwiched with the flavours that had soaked in from the tasty beef broth. I appreciated the lack of MSG in the broth, and enjoyed the slightly minty aftertaste along with the potent, savoury richness of the beef in this broth. The lime only provided that extra zing of flavour to enhance everything. Pretty damn good.
Well I won't go as far to say that it would beat the pho I've had in Hanoi a few years back, I would say this is as authentic as it gets here in Singapore. I look forward to visiting here again if I ever feel the mood for having decently good vietnamese pho at decent prices (by Singapore, not Vietnam standards).
Hearty, was what we felt, as we walked out of Nam Nam with warm tummies and a satisfied grin on our faces. That was all that mattered.
