31st October 2014.
This unassuming bakery along Macpherson Road has been around
since 1930. “PG” is the acronym of “Poh Guan” (welcome to acronym-crazed
Singapore). Poh Guan Bakery sells the familiar bread, biscuits and
confectionery that you would see in the neighbourhood. They have ais gems,
bread in the packs of 6 and traditional pastries like Tau Sar Piah and Wifey
biscuits. I got both the Salty and Sweet versions of the Tau Sar Piah.
I thought the tau sar piah from PG Bakery pales in comparison to Loong Fatt’s along
Balestier Road but they remained as satisfying companions for a cup of tea or
coffee.
Further east along Macpherson Road is Hong Sheng Ka Fei
Yuan (鸿胜咖啡园), a busy coffeeshop even after lunch hours. Workers from then industrial
estates as well as construction sites would come to the coffeeshop for a glass kopi
or teh, paired with a pau (supplied by Thow Yen).
I am not surprised. The coffee auntie here was really upbeat
and energetic. I had a glass of chilled Cheng Teng. Perfect after a busy morning.
