“What do you want to do after university?”
“Would we be seeing Tadao Ando’s works?”
The conversation was like pin ball, topics changed within
moments but this is the kind of place one would have conversations where smartphones
and tablets have a break. There are no rules are in place for conversations as
whatever was said gets drowned into the noisy chatter at Hwa Nam Restaurant.
This dim sum – zichar restaurant has been around for quite
some time along Thomson Road. To be honest, the dim sum here isn’t impressive. The har gaw (prawn dumplings) was dry and the skin breaks easily,
the siew mai has generous amount of meat but slightly salty and their chicken wrapped with beancurd skin was on the oily side.
Nonetheless, Hwa Nam Restaurant has a charm if not
sentimental value for the people staying around Thomson area who keep coming
back here for dim sum and have conversations with their friends. Perhaps it is
the old-world atmosphere, perhaps it is the affordability of the food or
perhaps it is the food which gives a warm comforting feeling.
