30th January 2014.
Chinese New Year's Eve.
It’s that time of the year again. Initially my mum decided to have reunion dinner at home after some lacklustre reunion dinners outside. However having her birthday dinner at Goldleaf Taiwanese Porridge Restaurant which dates back to 1971. She changed her mind and we booked a table for 10 for our reunion dinner.
The restaurant was very helpful and thoughtful in tweaking the menu for us, such as changing the fish to my mum’s favourite cod fish instead of soon hock and took out the wasabi prawns because some of our family members don’t really enjoy the wasabi.
We started off with the essential Goldleaf Prosperity Yusheng for Chinese New Year, instead of the classic yusheng, Goldleaf uses small chili in its concoction which gives the yusheng a mild spicy kick to it.
We also had the Double-Boiled Superior Chicken Broth with Fish Maw, a flavourful soup with a slight sweetness to it. The chicken and fish maw have the right texture and the soup wasn’t oily at all.
My dad really enjoyed the Imperial Soy Sauce Chicken which was very fragrant and tender.
My sister loved the Crispy-Fried Prawns Tossed with Salted Egg Yolk which was really fresh, crunchy and makes a perfect combination with the yummy salted egg yolk.
The Cod with Speciality Sauce, a signature of Goldleaf, was the star of the dinner with its crispy skin, perfect succulent flesh and a really tasty soy-based sauce and shredded fried ginger to go with it.
These are just some of the dishes on the Chinese New Year menu, overall my family had a really enjoyable meal. My mum thinks that it was the best she had in the few years and look forward to having our reunion dinner at Goldleaf for the next Chinese New Year.
