Thailand : Phitsanulok

Sukhothai to Phitsanulok

22nd February 2011. Written by Xin Li.
Phitsanulok, Thailand.
The modern looking city of Phitsanulok may not seem historically interesting as Sukhothai or Ayutthaya visually but the city is actually one of the oldest cities in Thailand and best known as the birthplace of King Naresuan who drove the Burmese out of the Siam in the late 16th century.

It is also the bastion of the Ayutthaya Kingdom for 25 years and served as a provincial center under Khmer Rule.

Today, probably scattered ruins and the few temples provide visual testimony to the city’s rich history.

This temple dates back to the mid 14th century and it is probably the most famous tourist attraction in the city. Located in the temple’s proximity are remains of ruins probably dating back to the Sukhothai period.

The temple’s grand vihara has a immense main entrance with mother-of-pearl inserts donated by King Boromakot in 1756.

Markets located around the temple offers cheap souvenirs and snacks such as banana crackers and Thai potato chips, an addictive snack.

PHAE FA THAI

Houseboats lined the Nan River that runs flows through the city of Phitsanulok, a sight that the city has developed a reputation for. To enjoy the view with delicious Thai cuisine, one can try Phae Fa Thai, a notable floating restaurant recommended by our driver.

The food was decently priced (though there could be cheaper ones) and the food was tasty. Most importantly, we had a good time dining next to the Nan River.

TRANSPORTATION HUB
Phitsanulok has its own train station and a bus terminal that offers buses to Sukhothai and Bangkok. There is also a domestic airport served by Nok Air, the Thai budget carrier (for a less time consuming and cheaper option compared to flying Bangkok Airways to Sukhothai). Hence, this city is easily a transit point if you are travelling to Sukhothai.
