Misono Teppanyaki 元祖鉄板焼ステーキ : Teppanyaki with a View

Misono Teppanyaki 元祖鉄板焼ステーキ - Outside

Kyoto, Japan.
Claimed to be the originator of the Kobe style-teppanyaki, the Misono Steakhouse is a rather posh but cozy teppanyaki restaurant located near Shijo-Kawaramachi Dori.

Craving for some delicious wagyu, I decided to pop by for lunch. I was able to get a window seat where one gets to dine with a panorama of central Kyoto as the backdrop.

The ‘No’ course consists of 120 grams of Kobe beef, tsukemono, appetizer, salad, rice, miso soup and a dessert and cost 2100 Yen.

Dining at Misono is almost like watching a performance. The climax of the meal is when the chef enters with a beautifully marbled filet of wagyu and proceeds to grill professionally to your liking.

These crispy garlic chips were very appetizing.

The symphony of the sizzling noises and slight splatter of oil plays like music to your ears. All these are accompanied by a harmonious mix of aromas from the sautéed garlic chips and grilled beef.

Look at that!

At the end of it, the juicy, tender slices of nicely charred Kobe beef were served to you on a bed of golden brown, crispy garlic chips. It was delicious!

The accompanying dishes such as the tangy salad of fresh and crunchy greens and hearty bowl of miso soup were well-executed too.

The main disappointment was perhaps the dessert which is a just a scoop of ordinary sorbet that I found it to be too sour to my liking. While the beef was delicious, it was not as tender as the omi beef I had in Hikone.

Service was exceptionally good, waitress and the chef himself would explain the best way to consume the beef and tries to introduce the dishes and the ambience is top notch, I like it that the restaurant does not have that formal atmosphere found in hotel teppanyaki restaurants.

There is also a cheaper 1500 Yen option that also includes their signature teppanyaki wagyu for lunch. Likewise, there are more pricey options too. The most expensive was 7880 Yen (Lunch) with premium beef.

Misono Teppenyaki, which dates back to the 1940s, can also be found in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. The honten, or head restaurant is located in Kobe.

  1. I ate here yesterday! It was the same chef too. I also got "no" and "so" set, but they actually are not Kobe beef, just premium Australian beef. The Kobe wagyu starts at 160000 yen for set, or 100000 yen a la cart. Still, it was very tasty, and a nice experience!
